Inspired by chiprj's Calvinopoly article Link , I thought I'd share something that I had run across on the internet awhile back. A homemade card game, 1000 Blank White Cards is one of those games (like chip's Calvinopoly) that should be played for fun, not truly competitively. While I haven't had a chance to play this yet, I'm dying to. I need to find some geeks in the local area (or head back 3 hours to my old geeks for a night of gaming).

So, like I said last time, I had Jarhead, Cinderella Man and Doctor Zhivago lined up for last night. I jumped right in with an easy choice: Jarhead. Based on a memoir of a former Marine's experiences during Desert Shield/Storm, this movie delivered an entertaining but sometimes sobering story of a man during war. There were different parts of the film that hit me harder now than they would've eight years ago. I can certainly recommend this, but keep in mind there's a little violence, so...

I had actually rented most of the stuff I listed last time much earlier in the week. Middle of the week, I got another batch: Constantine, Lord of War, and Jarhead. Based on the Hellblazer graphic novels published by DC Comics, Constantine is about a sort of paranormal detective fighting the forces of evil. Bearing little superficial resemblance to the comic character (who is a blonde Brit), Keanu Reeves still puts in a Keanu Reeves performance (fluffy but enjoyable) as the titular ch...

Hasting's has an introductory membership offer: not only do you get a free 2-liter of Coke (long gone, now), but you have 1/2 off movie rentals for the first two week. That first week was taken up by a spring break and a lot of G and PG movies (my favorite of which was Wallace & Grommit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit; I especially liked the way the 3-year old I was hanging with said the movie title). This week, now that I'm alone again, I've been renting more grown-up movies. (No, I'm not that...

From a commercial for tonight's Daily Show with John Stewart : And "trend spotter" will examine whether he needs to hire a 'life coach'. "A life coach is a person you hire when your life is falling apart and they tell you to 'walk it off.'" - John Stewart Yeah. I'll just walk it off.

This just struck me, as I contemplated the AA batteries I purchased in bulk at Toys'R'us, and the Hot Wheels racetrack that takes 4 D batteries. Is there anything besides batteries and breasts that are measured with this system? And what would a double D battery look like, anyway? I'm not sure, but I'm sure I'd like to have a pair.

It has been asked of me (by multiple friends, actually) if there are any gaming stores or comic stores in San Angelo, the city that I call my newest home. Sadly... no. There doesn't seem to be any any comic book shops in the immediate area. The guy at Waldenbooks (who chatted me up on recent comics after noticing I browsed the comic rack and bought a pack of HeroClix) said there were NONE. Crazy... it's a college town, fer cripe's sake! Looks like I'll be reapplying for a subscripti...

As some of my regular readers have figured out (sheesh, I have regular readers?), I "made it in one piece." I've reported into my gaining unit, signed my lease, and I'm actually on PTDY (Permissive Temporary Duty... kind of like a free vacation to get settled into my new home) until next Thursday. This week is actually Spring Break, so I have a couple of guys visiting me for some fun times. I've seen way too many kids DVDs (multiple times each, mostly), Shaggy Dog in the theatre, and playe...

They finally took it (fourth time's the charm!) so I don't have to buy a Gortex jacket. I wouldn't really want it, anyway. Don't get me wrong, they're nice, but soon enough I'll be switching to ACUs. SPC Gemstone pointed out that until the wear-out date for BDUs, you can pretty much mix-and-match ACU/BDU TA-50 and accessories. Just because it's in regs doesn't make it right . I clear the unit on Monday, and may also Final Out then as well. Might save it for Tuesday; there are still...

Everything went smoothly.. e-tool repainted, check. Gear laundered, check. But they didn't take the Gortex, even though I had laundered it. "The cuffs dirty, I can't issue dirty like this!" Spray + Wash, sit, scrub with a washcloth... I can't get it any cleaner. Going back for round 3... can't outprocess the unit until after CIF. May not be done until Monday now. Other news: I have a moving van reserved. SPC Whitebread is going to help me out tomorrow and Saturday getting the b...

There and back, 170+ miles each way, today. And all I'm doing is setting up the apartment, signing the lease. Ah, well. Looks like I might be outprocessing next week as well (on leave, probably), and moving my things after my report date. I need to see about PTDY.

They only kicked back 1/2 of what I tried to turn in: Gortex Wet Weather Pants Canteen Cover Canteen Canteen Cup First Aid Pouch Kevlar Cover Kevlar (So, I need to replace the webbing?) some other things And I forgot some things: Sweater Field Jacket Liner Pile Cap Coveralls (I have to turn these in?!? There's paint all over them now!) maybe something else And I felt too guilty to show them my Wet Weather Top. I think there's soda all over it, probably a Coke.

In the White Wolf roleplaying game, Vampire: the Masquerade , creation of a character included assigning both an outward personality and an inward one. These were generally classified by the same categories, just that the outward one was what the character would show other people, and the inward would define her actual motivations. Mine wound up being Outward : Mother/Caretaker, Inward : Child I think it actually defines me pretty well; due to the need to be taken care of, I attem...

Who said Arabs weren't innovative forward-thinkers? Looks like Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE are following through on their promise to begin using remote-operated robots (shaped like little boys!) as jockeys to race their camels. --"We hope this sport, which is part of our cultural heritage, will be spared from suspicion," said Kuwait's Energy Minister Sheikh Ahmad al-Fahd al-Sabah who opened the five-day championship.-- Because nothing says "Arab cultural heritage" like a boy-shaped trash...
