In the White Wolf roleplaying game, Vampire: the Masquerade, creation of a character included assigning both an outward personality and an inward one. These were generally classified by the same categories, just that the outward one was what the character would show other people, and the inward would define her actual motivations.

Mine wound up being Outward: Mother/Caretaker, Inward: Child

I think it actually defines me pretty well; due to the need to be taken care of, I attempt to be a caretaker to others. It shines through in my interpersonal relationships, and even in my work. As a Noncommissioned Officer, I have to take care of soldiers, and I am often tormented when they are in a situation where I can't help. SGT Greywar said some interesting things about the NCO/soldier relationship in an article (quite) awhile back.

But I do have a need to be taken care of, as well. I wish I could have kept in mind that there is a give and take, not just a take. I should have kept my outward should have been maintained, that it's not just a mask, but it's part of who I am, who I should be.

I'm never going to finish this... might as well unlock it.
