The one in English:

Is Ariel Sharon a sincere partner for peace?

Yes 20%
No 73%
Unsure 7%
Number of pollers: 19460
(Poll lasts from 16JAN05 to 21JAN05)

The one in Arabic (loosely translated; please note I'm flying blind with no dictionary):

Will the New Year bear out the failure of the election in Iraq?
Yes 69.8% 3845
No 30.2% 1664
Total voters 5509
(Poll lasts from 18JAN05 to 1FEB05)

Moral? Don't trust the Jew, but don't trust the Iraqis either?

I'll keep my eye out for a time when the two polls match...

I would tend to interperate the second one as the general Middle Eastern belief that Democracy is a sham and any election in Iraq will be a farce, rigged by America to put in a puppet government. I really don't want to sound condescending, but the perception of "Democracy" in the Middle East is about 20 shades worse than how it is percieved by Liberals here.

They just don't have any point of reference, and even if they did, I think many of them would think the lack of moral control is a minus, not a plus. Look at how they judge our culture, seperate of our government. I don't think a free market or a "Corporate Iraq" would actually be less respected than a totalitarian regime.

You don't sound condescending. I don't entirely agree with your assessment, but I need to let you know that I was being a bit facetious in my conclusions to this brief article.

I think the opinion within Iraq may differ from this poll, anyway. I don't know that they truly look down upon our culture, certainly not all of it, not with the rapidity that they burn DVD copies of our movies and CDs of our music.

(I think you meant that you *do* think it would be less respected, but I'm not certain I agree with that either. And whatever the third paragraph may have been, it hasn't shown up.)

Thank you for your comment.
