From the Army Times, to all my IRR friends

From the Army Times, 31MAY04, page 5:

Army Admits Re-Up Orders Were False
Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., said he is pleased with the response he received from the Army on May 20 regarding the re-enlistment of Army veterans under false orders.
The Army agreed to revoke the orders of any individual who believes he signed up under false pretenses, according [sic] a release from DeFazio's office.
DeFazio said in early May that members of the Individual Ready Reserve were told they had to choose new assignments in the Army Reserve or National Guard by May 17 or be involuntarily assigned.
The Army now admits the order was a mistake. The faulty order resulted in a 1,000 percent increase in enlistments in Oregon, DeFazio's office said.
"I am pleased the Army has agreed to fix this mistake," DeFazio said.

Okay, my comments on this:
1. Lots of WTF-ery going on here. I never saw the original message, but instead had it mentioned to me through my usual channels. Link and Link
2. How did the Army issue orders that were "a mistake"? Again, WTF-ery abounds.
3. I knew there was a reason I still read this rag.
4. Needs more cowbell.
5. Needs more paragraphs longer than one sentence.
6. INDIVIDUAL Ready Reserves. Who knew?

Off to notify the masses...

Actually, I just checked with real resources (the Army Times isnt even the "official" Army newspaper) and heres whats going on:
Everythings the same.

They are currently screening medical records and dates to still involuntarily enlist people in the reserves. If you have any questions please call (or write)

Hmmm... I have seen a lot of cases where the Army's right hand doesn't know what the left on is doing, but this is one of the odder incidences of it yet.

I have paperwork.....if you want me to, I can scan it for you and email it to you. Hows it going in the south?????

It's like overcharging customers 10$ each time. Out of 10 at least one won't bother dealing with it and will take it on the chin. Silent suckers they're called. 1000% increase....hmmm...

There's a more fleshed out version of what I posted at Representative DeFazio's website: Link

This might be asking for wrath, but Cthulhu seems to think it's true, too: Link

I'll point out that this particular incarnation of the Great Old One is ignoring a couple of other things (the fact that liberal Democrats penned HR163 and S 89).

I think the initial Army Times estimate of 1000% increase was a bit... off.

But I'm still open to this being not-a-hoax-not-an-imaginary-story-not-a-dream-sequence, mostly because none of the bigger news agencies have even sniffed around it. I'm still leaning in the direction of "mistaken orders." (Ugh.)

Wait! Having more carefully reread EL's comments (and downed a few cups of box wine), I realize that she's probably right (took me long enough, eh, Lassie?).

"They are currently screening medical records and dates to still involuntarily enlist people in the reserves."

This does, in fact, not contradict what the Army is claiming in this case. There are multiple instances of Reserve and Nat'l Guard recruiters (and Active Duty retention NCOs (not EL)) using this news to convince people to enlist in AR or NG units *immediately*, as if it would protect them from deployment.
'struth, only specialized troops like, well, me and Raver need to worry about this sort of thing. They're probably also looking for other specialties, but obviously it's all a plot by the Illuminati to forcefully indoctrinate Raver into MKUltra and a gay sex slave ring.

Okay, this last bit is hyperbolic conjecture. meh

I agree with #4. DEFINITELY needs more cowbell.

Forget the Draft for now--it's still languishing in committee. Since it was only ever Rangel's attempt to scare reality into the neo-clowns, it won't go anywhere if Rumskull can help it.

Now, mobilizing the IRR, on the other hand...5,600 are on the list so far, and more are coming.
on Jul 06, 2004
I thought it was 6500... whichever. So far, the IRR callup is targeting specific understrength specialties. I suppose stoploss and reup bonuses haven't been effective enough. I'm still not okay with the term "backdoor draft," but that might be the double entendre as much as the inaccuracy of the term.
Glad to see a Great Old One on the site, tho. ftaghn. I mean, fnord.
