The older boy is fixated upon Scooby Doo. I mean, the younger one is as well, but not to the extent that the older one has honed in on it. Both of them have SD underpants, we have two Scooby Doo video games and they enjoy my Scooby impressions.

He also wants a puppy. Every time he mentions how much he wants one, he immediately amends it with, "But we can't, because we live in an apartment." This isn't entirely true, but it's something I told him when I moved in. See, we had a dog (which my ex managed to lose last summer while the boys were here) and I had to explain to him why Tibby wasn't coming with them for the summer. But he desperately wants a canine friend to hang out with.

Finally, we've watched (and recorded) episodes of Ghost Hunters, which he's been bugging me about since he got here. Apparently, his mother let him watch an episode of the show at some point and from then on was obligated to DVR it for him. I've set the VCR for the new episode of the new season tonight and we'll likely continue taping it and watching it at intervals.

With no other major life goals (with the possibility of race car driver, but only if it's on a bright orange track that defies ordinary physics), I suspect he will want to drive around in a psychedilic van with a doggy friend looking for ghosts.

Jinkys.

Haha. That was my girl about a year ago. Now it's Mystery Hunters, and wanting an iguana.

I have no actual preference for a dog breed (although I would choose an inexpensive dog if I could). And while we are technically allowed to have a dog in our apartment (if I paid the $500 pet deposit), I still don't think it's a great idea. When the boys are here, we're away from the apartment for nearly 1/2 the day and when they aren't I'm in at work for much longer hours. It just doesn't seem fair to any pup to not give them more attention than that... and to lock them up in an apartment and expect them to not do their business in an inconvenient place? That seems unreasonable.

One of my long term goals, one that I'll look at more closely at my next duty station, is to rent/own a home where I can keep a dog... the further complication is that I would be imminently deployable regardless of where I go next, and I have no idea what I'd do with a dog for the 16 months I'd be away. I assure you, I can't think of these animals as a disposable toy (I know you do not, either), so I have to carefully weigh all the factors.

And, dang, that's a big picture.

edit: And they have a dog, at their mother's house. It's a pug, because she's in love with dogs that are "so ugly, they're cute." My oldest says a prayer for Frank every night (and for our still-missing chihuahua, Tiberius).

(the puppies were cute, though, no?)

Yes.

Tiberius is long gone; he "ran away" last summer while I had the boys. In actuality, I do believe he ran away as he had a tendency to tunnel out from under the fence in the back yard if unattended too long. It's just a matter of how long he was unattended and when it was that his absence was noted that I question...

Let's hope that some kindly soul took him in and decided to keep him for themselves. chihuahas are a popular breed so it's highly likely.

That's what I tell myself. It's more comforting to think that than the obvious alternative: some bird swooped down and had a snack.

I mean, he's a 5lb toothless chihuahua. Bird of prey or scavenging vulture, neither would have a difficult time of taking him.
