While on TDY (that's "Army business trip" to the lot of you), a Sergeant First Class I traveled with suggested that our group go out to the Flying Saucer. It's set up as a nice pub/bar, offering a wide variety of beers, pub-ish food and college age waitresses in short schoolgirl-style skirts.

They have an around-the-world style checklist, but I didn't even make a dent in the list, having only six pints while I was there (it was Pint Nite, select pints at $2.50).

I know I started with a Warsteiner Dunkel, which I haven't had since I was in Germany, a good dark beer. Sadly, I've lost track of the others, though. I know I had a Murphy's Irish Red (from Cork), chosen since I'm 1/8th Irish. (A fair excuse for drinking.) I know I had a Belgian Abbey Ale, a Trippel, brewed by actual monks. "Authentic Trappist Product," it said on the bottle. Not half bad, and I prayed through about half that beer. I finished with a Scrimshaw Pilsner, which I only remember because it's what at least two others of the group had settled on.

Another beer of note was chosen by a SFC due to its name alone: Victory Golden Monkey, which is a Belgian Pale Ale. It was one of those, "Holy crap, here, taste this!" moments, and not one of the good ones. While a technically well produced ale, it was sweet as all hell and only due to the discipline and diligence of the soldier who had ordered it was it finished.

The Saucer is also apparently known for its cheese selections. However, our group doesn't appear to be of that class, so we simply got foods that had cheese on them. We shared some Queso and chips, some cheese fries and some Rocket Tots (which have cheese baked in and are served with Habanero sour cream for dipping). I also ordered the "Brat Con Queso" as my meal. Yes, it was difficult for me to say. And basically it was sliced sausage in the same queso we were dipping our chips into, served with flour tortillas.

I figure it's the amount of food I ate that caused me to stop drinking, honestly. I was barely dehydrated this morning.

Good times.

That sounds so cool.  We'll have to go there when we're in Texas.

We have a Flying Saucer in Little Rock and it is our favorite place to go. I'm not a UFO member, but I should be.

As for the cheese, the Beer Cheese Soup in a bread bowl is my favorite food.

My friend has noticed that if we keep going there, we will eventually be abducted by aliens.

I decided not to count our time there as "NCO Professional Development" on my weekly time sheets.
