bonfire night, the noisiest holiday of the year .

Ahh yes, Guy Fawkes night, aka Bonfire night.  I LOVED that particular holiday when I was a kid.  Dad would buy a bumper pack of fireworks and we'd stand at the bottom of the garden, past the compost heap and the chicken run, shooting off bottle rockets and making letters and numbers in the air with the sparklers that came with the pack. 

Just because it came to mind, here's the rhyme that we were taught as kids about Guy Fawkes:

'Remember, remember the 5th of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.'

All the family round the bonfire, badly made guy fawkes and all the stuff you didn't like from cristmas.

Having looked up some info on Mr. Fawkes, I find that the full rhyme gets quite a bit anti-Catholic at the end but I suppose that's understandable given the political backdrop of the original Gunpowder Plot.


The whole discussion (not just with you lot) has stretched over the course of the day... it rather smacks of holisticism, or at least coincidence.

Nah, I don't believe in any anti-catholic sentiment to it at all. . . I mean, doesn't the rest of the world still burn the pope in effigy like parts of the UK on the 5th of Nov?

That's odd. I knew about the 5th of November just about around the time I learned about the months of the year. I think I was five.
