Too early?
Published on November 16, 2005 By pseudosoldier In Life Journals
Suddenly, today, everything happened.

I came off of duty recovery with only roughly 60 hours left to get all my History classwork done before the drop-dead-line of Friday night. I'm not nearly done, and I'm not sure when I'm going to do it all... probably during that time I had scheduled to sleep.

All sorts of balls are in the air as Platoon Sergeant, some of which I hadn't set in motion, some of which I had thrown up there several weeks ago, some of which I had never seen before I saw them hurtling towards my face. I'm dropping them left and right, and it's a mad scramble to not let the soldiers down.

"I'm only one man," I tell them, "but I want to help you. Don't allow me to let you down. Keep on me until I get you [whatever it is that particular soldier needs, be it Green to Gold packets, a pass form, or counseling of their battle buddy for being a bit of a doof]."

I missed the training meeting. Well, I forgot. Then, I remembered. Exactly when it started, I remembered. And I was in the wrong place. In the wrong uniform. Without any of the things that the Lieutenant told me to have.
I got there an hour late, still in the wrong uniform, still without anything I was supposed to have.

They didn't even let me in.

But that's okay, there's a phone call for you! SFC Re-up. Hey, you're on orders.

They said they'd wait until January at the earliest. But you're on orders now. It's where you expected to go, but it's two months early.

What to do?

30 days from Tuesday. Re-up, or DCSS.

Decisions, decisions...

Hey, you're on orders.

Where to? Anywhere but umm.....how to say it without saying it........the unit with vomit in their mouths. Just a little bit. Or is it off to staff sergeant school? Or just for promotion?

There is no longer a "Staff Sergeant School." There are no conditional promotions. These are not the droids you're looking for.

I'll have to do BNCOC, but only after I PCS. Yes, full PCS. I've been here for so long, there's no way to avoid it without Declination of Continuing Service Statement (similar to, but not exactly like, a Bar to Reenlistment, which is what it is normally referred to as).

No, it's not another Guardrail unit.

well, where is it?!?

Wow. I owe you a phone call something fierce. And a couple of visits, I suspect.

Yep.

But that's ok. More to the point, where are you going, and when?

I have two choices:

A) GAFB, AIT instructor, report date of 10FEB05. Requires a four year reenlistment.

DCSS, stay here, ETS 28NOV05.

I'm torn. I'm very torn.

28NOV05

If you choose that, you'd be out immediately?

Bad, BAD fat fingers.

28NOV06. Sorry. On the flip side, in a month, I'll be wrong the other way... (1JAN05?).

I owe you a phone call something fierce.

And, I still owe you a phone call, especially after seeing lifehappens last weekend. Hope duty wasn't too bad on you.
