Of spices.
Published on May 15, 2006 By pseudosoldier In Cooking
I've been slowly and quietly acquiring a collection of spices for my little apartment. My usual procedure is just to wait until I have a recipe that requires an ingredient I don't have, and then I pick it up...

But I'm paranoid. Is there something I don't have that I *should*? Something that an adult shouldn't be without?

So far, I have:

Pure Ground Black Pepper
Iodized Salt
Garlic Powder (essential!)
Ground Cardamom (I love just a little in a steak marinade)
Paprika
Chili Powder
Minced Onion
Ground Cloves
Cilantro Leaves
Coarse Ground Black Pepper
Adobo
Ground Cumin (still sealed)
Oregano Leaves (still sealed)
Seasoned Salt (still sealed)
Sea Salt (still sealed)

I'll listen to all suggestions, and suggestions for things to make with them as well... Tell me your secret weapons! I need to create!

My favorite herb: tarragon. Use it in cream sauces as well as a seasoning for omelettes.

Be well.

I'm a spice junky, but among what you're missing, I'd say absolutely rosemary for meats, bay leaves (for soups, stews and pot roasts), and I'm never, never without nutmeg.

You have a lot of great suggestions here.

If you like all those herbs and spices why not get a little window box, or planter box and grow fresh herbs. They are so tasty and easy to grow. Great in salads, soups, stews and marinades. Anything really. You just have to use more than you would for dry spices.

I am jealous of the saffron whip is getting. That is some expensive but yummy stuff.

White pepper!
With garlic it will make your ribeye steaks rival Prime rib for good taste.
Sugarbakers has all kinds of peppers available and they are less expensive than the grocery stores. Just get a grinder for them.
